It is quite frustrating and embarrassing to have with unremitting instances of hiccup, especially when you are busy with your work or attending any gatherings etc. So, what actually is causing these exasperating hiccups that might hamper your normal lifestyle?
Hiccup is a sudden involuntary contraction of the diaphragm i.e. a muscular partition separating the thorax from your abdominal region. The sound that you experience with your hiccups is due to the sudden shutting down of the vocal cords due to the muscular contraction.
Several factors may be responsible for hiccup spells some of which include:
- Overeating or drinking excess carbonated beverages or eating or drinking too fast
- Emotional stress
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Excessive alcohol consumption
- Irritation of nerves that controls the diaphragm
- Toxic fumes
- Surgery
While, in normal circumstances, hiccups may be considered absolutely normal, but if your hiccups persist for more than 48 hours you must consult your physician and get thoroughly checked.
Although most of the hiccup instances do not necessitate any treatment and stops naturally, however, there are a few interesting and effortless practices that may ease your short-term, yet troublesome hiccups:
- Hold your breath for a little while and then release. The carbon dioxide that you are holding back will help stop your hiccups
- Drink normal or cold water. This will help to stimulate your vagus nerve that will lessen your hiccups.
- Sink your teeth into a lemon
- Gulp down some crushed sugar
- Lean forward gently to compress your chest
- Gargle with water
Nevertheless, intractable and importunate hiccups should not be ignored and may require necessary medical attention. It is desirable to ask for doctor’s advice if your hiccups are linked with fever, nausea, pain in abdomen, shortness of breath or feeling that something got stuck in your throat.
Persistent hiccups are treated on the basis of underlying causes and usually range from various medications or at times the process of acupuncture.
