Ranjani Gopal: The Inspiring Journey of India’s Only Visually Challenged Chartered Accountant

A visually challenged woman Ranjani Gopal, became the first blind woman to pass the Chartered Accountancy (CA) Examination in 2002, one of the toughest examinations in the country having only 15% passing rate.

During her childhood, Ranjini became the victim of medical malpractice and misconception when she was treated with the antibiotic penicillin for common cough and cold without giving any test dosage to confirm any possible allergic reaction. One of the local doctors was the culprit and Ranjini was a 9-year-old kid then.

This is, however, a common practice in India, where doctors freely prescribe antibiotics without considering their side effects and they rarely give test doses to determine whether the patient has any allergic reaction against the given antibiotic. People also tend to receive self medication that can result in similar problems.

Ranjini was allergic to Penicillin and as a result, she developed “Steven Johnson Syndrome” after receiving the full dose treatment with Penicillin. Gradually, her vision started to deteriorate and by the time she completed her degree course for B.Com, she lost her vision in her right eye.

This loss made her life difficult as she struggled to find a suitable job because of her disability. But, she never gave up and decided to pursue a CA course, one of the toughest in the country to improve her possibility of getting an apt job.

She started the CA course with never ending perseverance, firmness and determination. During the CA course it was not mandatory to attend regular classes. So, Ranjini utilized the time by learning the use of computer and screen reading software. She converted all her study materials into soft copy and started studying with the help of the screen reading software (the software that reads out the on screen content). She whole heartedly focused on her course that enabled her to achieve success even after facing many initial difficulties. Today, she was well placed as CA in a well known and well established firm.

Ranjani Gopal has proved that it is possible to achieve all the success in life when you determined and focused enough to go after your goals. There will be initial difficulties, troubles and roadblocks. But, you can overcome every obstacle in your path of success with sheer hard-work and compassion.
