When it comes to love and sex between matured couple, everything should be spontaneous. Here, the term “matured couple” is very significant. In India, premarital sex is considered as a taboo. But, to the current generation, especially those living in big cities and urban areas, premarital sex is acceptable and they do not take it as a taboo at all. The young India is happy to adapt to the Western Culture regarding premarital sex. The fact is, the young generation is maturing quickly, but they are marrying later and happy to live in relationship. This results in many of them having premarital sex.
Now, is it an acceptable change?
If, two matured persons agree to have sex between them, there should not be any third party to have their say. The important part is whether the couple is mature enough to handle the situation. If the young generation is engaged in premarital sex just to prove a point that they are more modern, then there is a problem. Evidently, they will not possess the sense or maturity to deal with several consequences of having a sexual relationship.
In post marital sex, even if the partners are young they can seek advice from elders, family members and friends, which is often not possible with premarital sex as the partners could not share the problems with others (except may be friends, who are also not matured enough in that respect).
The Consequences
Moreover, the younger generation often indulges themselves with premarital sex with sex workers and have multiple partners. A recent study suggests that 13% of the people admitted of having premarital sex have more than nine sex partners while more than 50% of them have more than one partner. This is of great concern as it bears high risk consequences of sexually transmitted disease (even HIV), young age pregnancy and motherhood, illegal and unsafe abortion, abundant child, single mother, etc.
Social Taboo and Reality
In India, premarital sex is considered as a social taboo and even today it is not accepted in major part of the country. Of course, one should not consider premarital sex as a social taboo in modern concept, but one should keep an eye on the possible consequences and behave accordingly. Our young generation is attaining early puberty due to ease of information, but mentally they are not maturing at the same space. Many of them start a sexual relationship at very young ages (12-14 yrs). The affluent section of the society often has less sexual partners and has a consistency in condom use, making them much safer against the consequences of having a sexual relationship. But, the lower economic class are not so fortunate as they have an inconsistent condom use and more frequency of multiple sex partners.

Where We Stand
The occurrence of premarital sex is still highest among students living in hostels, clearly suggesting the fact that young people living with their families still find it difficult to indulge in premarital sex.
The debate of whether premarital sex is acceptable or not will go on. But, in reality it is the fact that around 30%-40% people in India have admitted of having premarital sex in various studies. As most of them are college going students (average age 20 yrs); it will be a more mature response from our side to carry out certain actions (like promoting diagnosis and treatments of sexually transmitted disease, accessibility of condoms, awareness camps etc.) around college campuses across the country to minimize the ill-consequence of premarital sex among students. The matured section of the population can obviously handle the situation by their own.
